The Lumiere Response:

For the PPM final i worked with Cameron and Matt to create a Lumiere Response. We shot and created around 15 lumiere videos. What is a lumiere video ? http://videoblogging.info/ . The speciality of a lumiere video is that it is supposed to follow the following protocols:

  • 60 seconds max.
  • Fixed camera
  • No audio

At first i thought it was kind of dull and boring but as i started producing lumiere videos and watching them it was very interesting. I started to notice things which could be shot in lumiere format.

Anyways our project was a Video blog : www.itp.nyu.edu/~my661/hitchcock

This is a video blog for lumiere videos. The difference is out site has a video comment plugin which allows the videos to be commented on. We also have a flip button which allows viewers to flip through videos similar to the tv remote. The original video commenting plugin was developed by ITP researchers John Schimmel and Shawn Van Every. Another feature of our project it the upload feature. A user can click on the upload button and upload their lumiere videos easily.

Live Stream:

Since i could not get the DSS working i decided to stream live me doing nothing at work. First downloaded and installed Quicktime Broadcaster and they set up the live stream. The setting up process was quite easy. It was fun broadcasting a live stream even though i had like 1 viewer. It was similar to normal video chat as it was my friend who was watching my stream. I think live streaming could be put to good use if you are streaming some live event. So final verdict? my stream sucked. could have been better if i was doing something cool.

Also i set up Varasoft Wirecast on my PC http://www.varasoftware.com/products/wirecast/. It was similar to setting up QT Broadcaster. I set up a live stream of my room which not only streamed the video but also saved it on my hard disk. After i set it up i went out and left it running so i can get back and review the video and see if anything unusual happened. Nothing happened.

Darwin Streaming Server:

The Darwin Streaming Server (DSS) is a opensource streaming server which is used to stream video. I tried installing the server but apparently they do not have a Windows XP compatible one. But on reading the forums people have been sucessful installing the Windows 2000 DSS on an XP so i thought ill give it a try.

I downloaded the package from http://developer.apple.com/opensource/server/streaming/index.html .

Once the package is extracted i was supposed to install the batch file which after great difficulty i found in the folder WinNTsupport.

Then i had to install active perl 5.8. Now i was supposed to set up the cofig but apparently not all the files which were to be extracted where there. So i uninstalled everything and re did the whole process but was faced with the same problem.
